Islamabad, October, 2026: Students of BSMS 5A from SZABIST University Islamabad Campus visited the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) office in Islamabad as part of their Media Law and Ethics course. The study tour provided students with an opportunity to understand the practical application of media laws and regulations in Pakistan’s electronic media landscape.
During the visit, Mr. Rahat Ali, Director General (Monitoring and Vigilance / Monitoring Wing), welcomed the students and provided a detailed briefing on PEMRA’s mandate, powers, functions, board composition, and complaint redressal mechanism, including the Council of Complaints.
An interactive question-and-answer session followed, during which Mr. Ikram Barkat, Director General PEMRA, addressed students’ questions regarding the enforcement of PEMRA laws and the regulation of content across electronic media platforms.
The students also visited PEMRA’s Monitoring Room, where officials explained the procedures involved in television content monitoring. They were introduced to the different layers of editorial oversight and gatekeeping practices used by television channels to review and regulate broadcast content.
The study tour offered valuable practical insights into the regulatory framework governing electronic media in Pakistan. It also helped students connect the theoretical concepts discussed in their Media Law and Ethics course with professional practices related to media regulation, content monitoring, and editorial accountability.
Through such academic visits, SZABIST University Islamabad continues to promote experiential learning and provide students with opportunities to engage with relevant industry institutions. These initiatives help bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice while strengthening students’ understanding of the media industry.
