Seminar on Media Ratings, TV Rankings and Monitoring of Electronic Media Content


A seminar on Media Ratings, TV Rankings and Monitoring of Electronic Media Content was organized by the Department of Management Sciences and orchestrated by Ms. Khansa Zaman for educating marketing students about media ratings, advertising and the role of PEMRA in the overall monitoring of electronic media content. PEMRA Chairman Mr. Absar Alam was the guest speaker and comprehensively informed the students about the role of PEMRA in monitoring all electronic media content published by TV channels; such as advertisements, news, morning shows etc. PEMRA Chairman Absar Alam has said owners of major news channels were more interested in making money than providing their viewers with accurate and reliable information. Because of this, broadcasting standards have nosedived. He also referred to the fake news regarding the Gulberg Blast in Lahore dated 23rd Feb. 2017 and how Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) imposed a fine of Rs. 1 million on each national private television channel and Rs 500,000 on regional for airing fake news of a bomb blast. The marketing students found the session highly informative and enlightening. The seminar was concluded with an interactive Q&A session between the students and the guest speaker.
