SZABIST Book Fair - Fall 2013

A one day book fair organized by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) Islamabad campus uncovered interesting trends relative to book reading among young generation: students seem very much interested in reading, its only the technological revolution that has apparently distance them from books.

Almost all major book sellers of Islamabad held their stalls at the fair which was aimed to promote the habit of book reading among youngsters.

At the end of the fair it turned out that students were not interested to buy any material which is easily available on the internet .Book sellers were of the view that since goggle has become a gateway to the world of knowledge people specially the youth does not seem inclined to purchase books.

The fair offered books on science, philosophy, medicine, history, culture, religion, literature and world politics. Yet the stall holders could not sell as much material as they expected.

But what is interesting is that students were deeply interested in buying Urdu literature featuring books by celebrated writers including Qudrat Ullah Shahab, Saddat Hassan Manto,Bano Qudseya,Amjad Islam Amjad,Atta ul Haq Qasmi ,Ashfaq Ahmed, Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi and Mumtaz Mufti .

Book sellers said that the reason why students are more interested to buy Urdu literature than anything else is that this material is not easily available on internet.

A representative of Saeed book bank said "It would not be correct to conclude that students are not interested to read or the habit of book reading is dying it is just that internet has emerged as the easiest and quickest tool to seek knowledge".

What is more interesting is that even students belonging to business, marketing and computer sciences were interested to buy Urdu literature and at the end of the day highest number of books sold in the fair were novels, short stories and poetry collections.

Mr. Farhan Akhter a student of MBA said "I find Urdu literature simply fabulous. It interests me; it educates me and exposes me to a whole new world of intellectualism".
