According to medical experts Thalassemia is a blood disorder passed down through families "Inherited" in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin .The protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen .The disorder resulted in excessive destruction of red blood cells which leads anemia and the patient thus requires periodic transfusion of blood to survive.

Experts say the best way to prevent Thalassemia is that male/female has their blood tested before marriage to make sure that they don't carry Thalassemia minor. A couple carrying Thalassemia minor will result in birth of children effected by Thalassemia major which is the full blown disease.

Medical experts also says that lack of awareness regarding thalassemia is leading to the spread of this disease where as in the west this blood disorder has been largely curtailed through medical tests and increased awareness.

Shabnam Tariq mother of nine yr old Thalassemia patient Sumair Tariq while sharing her agony with the organizer students said that she has lost her 19 yr old daughter who was also a thalassemia patient. She said expensive medical treatment for thalassemia is hard to be born as only the blood transfusion requires 30000 a month.

Experts from Burhani Blood Bank AFIT while speaking on the occasion dispelled the general misperception that blood donation in any way effects health of the donor. They made it clear that blood donation decreases cholesterol level in the person's blood and periodically donation also helps timely detects any possible diseases that the donor may be carrying.

Director SZABIST Syed Asad Hussain urged the students to continue actively participating in welfare activities specially those targeting the poor section of the society. He said that the three day blood donation camp was spare headed by the MBA students of SZABIST and they will continue this campaign in the future as well.
